The Building Tech Safety program at WAGEC responds to the growing use of technology as a tool of control, surveillance, and ongoing harm against women and young people.

Building Tech Safety is a trauma-informed, strengths-based program that supports women to navigate and use technology safely, in ways that feel right for them.

Over 5 weeks, women will learn about securing devices and accounts, AI awareness, scams and phishing, tech safety and social media, image-based abuse and technology-facilitated abuse.

Women who want to build confidence using technology safely and strengthen their understanding of online safety, privacy and security.

Who this Course is for

Across five weeks, you'll learn practical skills that help strengthen your digital safety and confidence.

The course explores securing accounts and devices, understanding artificial intelligence, recognising scams and phishing, improving privacy settings, navigating social media safely, and responding to image-based abuse and technology-facilitated abuse.

Building Tech Safety is designed to help women develop a positive, informed and empowered relationship with technology.

What You Will Explore

Week 1 – Introduction and Securing Accounts and Devices

  • Creating strong, secure passwords

  • Using multi-factor authentication

  • Managing devices, apps, and account access

  • What to do if an account is compromised

Week 2 – AI Awareness and Safety

  • Understand what AI is and its role in everyday life

  • Recognise the difference between helpful and not-so-helpful use of AI

  • Practise how to write clear, useful prompts

Week 3 – Scams and Phishing

  • Why privacy and location settings are important

  • How to create strong passwords and passcodes

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

  • How to check privacy settings on social media and apps

Week 4 – Tech Safety and Social Media

  • Understand our digital environment and digital footprint

  • Identify positive and negative uses of technology

  • Explore respectful and safe relationships online

Week 5 – Image-Based Abuse and Technology-Facilitated Abuse

  • What image-based abuse means and how it can happen

  • Simple steps to report harmful content and reduce harm

  • How to block, secure accounts and document incidents

  • Where to find support and help when you need it

  • Understand what technology-facilitated abuse is

  • Practical skills for responding to technology-facilitated abuse

  • Skills to keep safe online

  • Build a positive, informed and empowered relationship with technology

Meet your Facilitators

WAGEC

The course will be run by qualified tech abuse professionals from WAGEC who work with domestic violence survivors.

Women's and Girls' Emergency Centre (WAGEC) is a Sydney-based not-for-profit organisation that supports women and families in crisis or escaping domestic violence. They provide crisis housing, group programs, counselling, casework and healing programs for children, and work to prevent violence against women and children through advocacy and social change.

Technology-facilitated abuse can include monitoring devices, tracking locations, accessing accounts, online harassment, image-based abuse and other forms of digital control.
